General Questions

What is AnniePancake Sewing School?
We’re a creative, hands-on sewing school where beginner and intermediate-level sewists can learn, practice, and have fun. Our goal is to make sewing approachable and enjoyable for everyone aged 12 and up. We offer classes at the studio for up to 4 students at a time as well as private lessons.

Do I need any sewing experience to take a class?
Not at all! We welcome complete beginners. Please sign up for our Absolute Beginner class. We’ll guide you step by step so you feel confident and supported.

Where are you located?
Our studio is located in Larkspur, California within walking distance of downtown Larkspur and old town Corte Madera. Hall Middle School and Redwood High are a 20 minute walk. Full address and directions are on our Location page.

Classes and Scheduling

How do I sign up for a class?
Simply visit our Classes page, choose your class, and register online. Spaces are limited, so we recommend signing up early! Don’t forget to sign a liability waiver before your first class.

What should I bring to class?
Just bring yourself! We provide sewing machines, fabric, tools, and basic supplies. If a class requires special materials, or there’s the option to bring your own fabric, we’ll let you know in advance. We provide all materials for the Absolute Beginner and Beginner Part 2 classes to avoid confusion.

Are sewing machines provided, or do I need my own?
We provide machines for in-studio classes. If you’d like to learn on your own machine, you’re welcome to bring it (and bobbins and needles sized for your machine), but make sure you know how to thread it, wind/insert the bobbin, change the needle, and how to adjust the tension settings. We can’t take time away from other students to teach you how to use your machine. Alternatively, you can book a private lesson where we can help you learn to use your machine before attending a group class.

Can kids/teens join classes?
Yes! Our classes are open to kids 12+ and adults. Please check the age requirements listed in each class description on the Classes page, as some classes are specifically designed for sewists 12-14 years.

What types of classes do you offer?
We offer beginner workshops, skill-building courses, project-based classes, and private lessons. We plan to expand the types of classes as time goes on. Please email us with suggestions.

What kinds of projects will I make as a beginner?
Beginners usually start with fun, useful projects like tote bags or fabric baskets. Next level courses include zipper pouches and pajama pants.

How long is each class or course?
Most classes run between 2.5-4 hours.

Do you offer private lessons?
Yes! Private lessons are great if you want one-on-one attention or need help with a specific project. Lessons are 90 minutes, as I find an hour is too short. Please see the Classes page for details.

Is there a waitlist for fully booked classes?
Yes, we offer 4 spots on the waitlist for fully booked classes. If a class is fully booked, you will automatically be given the option to be placed on the waitlist. You will be notified by email and/or text if a space becomes available.

Pricing and Payment

How much do classes cost?
Prices vary by class length and materials included. Each class listing has detailed pricing information.

What payment methods do you accept and do we need to pay in advance?
We accept all major credit cards and online payments. Full payment is required in advance to secure your spot, which is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Payments are non-transferable unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes! A sewing class makes a wonderful gift. Gift certificates are available here.

Are fabrics and supplies included in the class fee?
All beginner classes include supplies. For advanced or custom projects, you may need to bring your own materials. Each class description will list what’s included.

What is your cancellation or refund policy?
We understand that plans change. Cancellations made 48 hours before class may be rescheduled or refunded. No refunds or credits will be issued for cancellation made less than 48 hours in advance UNLESS we are able to fill your spot with someone from the waitlist. If the school cancels a class, students will receive a full refund.

Safety and Conduct

What safety measures are in place for students?
We provide a safe, supervised environment and teach proper use of machines and tools. That being said, machine sewing requires working with sharp and hot items, and accidents do happen, which is why we require students to sign a liability waiver when registering for a class. Students must follow all safety instructions when using sewing machines, scissors, irons, and other equipment. The school reserves the right to dismiss any student who engages in unsafe, disruptive, or disrespectful behavior, without refund.

What happens if I am late to class?
Please arrive on time. Classes will begin on time, and class time will not be extended for late arrivals.

What happens if I am early to class? Is there a place to wait for class to start?
Students are welcome to sit at the table inside Annie’s gate or in one of the chairs outside the studio for up to 30 minutes before class. If it’s raining heavily, students will be permitted to come inside the studio up to 10 minutes before class.

Other

Can we use our phones during class?
We expect students to limit the use of their phones during class. Specifically, it’s appreciated that phones not be used when the instructor is speaking or demonstrating.

Can I eat or drink during class?
Water is the only beverage that will be available to students inside the studio, and all water bottles must be kept inside bags, backpacks, or in the kitchen area of the studio during class. This is to prevent water from accidentally being spilled in the area of the sewing machines or irons. That being said, if a student needs to have a snack or a drink other than water during class, there are 2 seats right outside the studio door.

Will my photo be taken?
The school may occasionally take photos or videos during classes for marketing purposes. If you do not wish to be photographed, please notify us in writing before the class.

Are there rules around reproducing materials and/or patterns received in class?
All class handouts, patterns, and instructional materials are for personal use only and may not be reproduced, sold, or distributed without permission.

Is there a bathroom?
There is a gender-neutral bathroom available for student use inside the studio.

Is it possible that these policies will change?
The school reserves the right to update these terms and conditions at any time. The most current version will always be available here.
